Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life's most civilized pleasures

Michael Broadbent

Wine is sunlight held together by water.

Galileo Gallilei

If food is the body of good living, wine is its soul.

ABOUT US

On the sunlit north facing slope of Cradock Peak, the highest crest of the Outeniqua Mountain range running parallel to the Southern Cape coast and creating part of the scenic attraction of the Garden Route, is the flourishing Herold Wines vineyard. Bounded on three sides by nature reserve, it is a remote and idyllic setting, the vineyards embraced by lofty mountains covered with dramatic stands of fynbos.

Herold Wines is unique. At between 650m and 700m its vines are rooted at a higher altitude than most other South African vineyards. This, together with frequent mountain mists, icy winter frosts and snow, cooling summer south easterly winds drawn by the Outeniquas from the nearby Indian Ocean and year round rainfall, results in a protracted growing season.

Herold Wines is the perfect destination for an outing or weekend getaway in the Garden Route, accessed via the scenic and historic Montagu Pass which winds its way up through the mountains above George in the Southern Cape.

Wine tasting is in an unpretentious tasting area set among tanks and barrels in the working cellar, with winemaking in view at harvest and the farm ladies hand labelling bottles during the quiet times. It is an experience of homely hospitality and sharing of folk, farm and wine lore with the owners who are usually on hand to join visitors around the cosy cellar fireplace or at the vine shaded tables. Light lunches and teas are available and picnic facilities. Wheelchair friendly.

There is comfortable self-catering accommodation in four quaint farm cottages, and several accessible hiking trails into the Outeniqua Nature Reserve or easy farm walks, fynbos footpaths and river swimming pools. Well over 100 bird species have been listed. Wide open spaces, secret paths and hideaways between rocks and trees create adventures in nature for children.

Escape to the Garden Route mountains and relax in the ambience of the Outeniquas with the wines, people and place of Herold…
